Eric Hamber Secondary School Replacement Project

Project Details

As part of the Provincial Seismic Mitigation Program, the Ministry of Education announced funding for the replacement of Eric Hamber Secondary School, originally built in 1962, with a new school on the northwest corner of the existing site.

The new school will be approximately 15,000 square metres in size. It will provide a state-of-the-art learning environment for 1,700 students from grades 8 – 12. In addition, a 69-space childcare facility for ages zero to four is being proposed. This 1,500 square metre childcare facility is funded by the City of Vancouver, and is over and above the approved school size.

It is the Ministry’s top priority to ensure all students in B.C. attend seismically safe schools as soon as possible. The existing school will remain operational during construction and will then function as a swing space for other seismic school projects, after which it will be demolished. Being a swing space will ensure other schools are able to complete the much-needed seismic work and allow all students and educators in B.C. to be in a seismically safe environment.

The new school will be built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold standards. Design and construction is slated to begin in early 2020, and the new Eric Hamber Secondary School is expected to welcome students in fall 2023.

The Project is being procured using a design-build approach.
